Here’s a question of eternal significance: what do you eat for breakfast? I’m asking because I’m back to running and need some go-to, high protein breakfast options. My current bowl of cereal just ain’t cutting it. Recently I was contacted by Premier Protein because they’re in Sacramento this week giving out free protein shakes and bars at their Human Charging Stations. Their email got me thinking…maybe a protein shake each morning wouldn’t be a bad way to stay charged for morning runs.
The thing is, while I’m very motivated to lose my remaining baby weight (so that I don’t have to wear maternity jeans this fall), it’s hard to know what to eat when I’m breastfeeding and STARVING all the time. I want to make sure I’m eating enough, especially if I’m burning extra calories while running, but I don’t want to overeat. And some mornings? Well some mornings I run around like a chicken with my head cut off and end up scarfing a Costco granola bar at the park while Anna plays. No bueno.
If I had total control over my schedule like I did in the pre-kid days, my run would take place at 6:00am (before eating breakfast) which would allow me to eat a big meal upon return. But these days I head out with both kids in the BOB around 9 or 10am. People, running with a double stroller is no joke. Even though my stroller is really nice I’m still pushing close to 50 pounds! It’s exhausting, so I definitely need a breakfast that doesn’t weigh me down. I could see how drinking a shake before the run, or eating a bar after I finish, might help give me a little more energy. And the most appealing part is that a shake or bar requires no prep time.
