in Anna

These days I tiptoe
avoiding creaking floor boards
This time is too sacred to interrupt.
I take a risk.
Slowly open, hold my breath
take in her pink pig pajamas; little girl locks.
Hidden in her chubby face is a glimpse at
days when I will no longer have to tiptoe
days when I will do anything to watch her
days when I will beg her awake or be late
days when her gangly teenage limbs wear ratty old t-shirts
and the weight of growing responsibility.
So these days I will cherish
sweet whispers
long stares
the wild sprawl of toddler sleep
and the anticipation of 10:55pm.
