Hey Lesley- I’m getting caught up on my blog reading : ) I got a kindle last xmas and was hesitant because I too, love flipping through a book, underlying passages and marking it up so I can reference it later if I want. The truth is the Kindle is an adjustment, but since books are so hard to get here it’s been a life saver. One of my favorite features (besides “checking out books from the SB Library” online) is that you can underline or highlight passages and save it in your kindle or email it to yourself. I like having a whole document with my favorite passages or quotes right there.

Also, it is the BEST thing to bring when traveling.

It seems like a lot of you have Nooks. You’re making me interested in that e-reader over the Kindle.

I just recently wrote about this! A few of my friends have actually been really rude to me about having a Nook, which I find … weird, to say the least. Really, really weird. I LOVE paper books. I LOVE how convenient my Nook is. I just love reading, in general, so I feel that whatever gets and keeps you reading is the right way to read. My book purchases are more Nook-based right now because it’s so handy, but I love hard-copy books and will probably always purchase a mix of both. For bathtub/beach reading I like a book that won’t die if I drop it in the water, which I’ve done before with some of my paperback favorites (it just added some, uh, character! and texture! to the pages).

Janna did a great job of covering most of what I would have said.

I rarely pay for books (btw, Barnes & Noble offers at least one free book every Friday) and will gladly request physical books if I can’t check out an e-book version through Overdrive. oh, and now, I can walk downstairs to my building lobby and hop on to the library website and download an available book right then and there! (anywhere with wi-fi) this was seriously great news for me!

also, as a person who chooses to use public transportation (more reading time), the worst moment was finishing a book and not having a new one to start. conversely, carrying around 2 big ol’ hardbacks was cumbersome. no problem with the Nook!

and……think about having favorite little kid books/games loaded on your e-reader! I have entertained a few co-workers kids when they were bored waiting for whatever. I don’t do movies or internet cruising with mine, but that option is also there. for as much of a hold out as I was, I am really really happy I have a Nook!

I too was adamantly against an e-reader. I love the feeling of books in my hand and being able to lug it into the bathtub and not worry about electrocuting myself. Then my husband bought me a Nook Glo.

My life has changed. For a trip, it is a must. I went to Hawaii for a week and finished three book while there and only had to haul around one small device. I have a library card for Yolo County, Sacramento County and Placer County and can check books out (10 at a time) and load them onto my Nook. You can keep them for three weeks, so check out wisely. I can also “buy” free books from the Barnes and Noble website. I have not purchased a book in the six months I had had the Nook. I also have three friends that have Nooks. The device allows you to “friend” their device and share books with each other. The only thing missing is the hastily scribbled notes in the margins.

This may or may not apply to you, but the biggest change my Nook Glo made for me is, I can read in the dark. No lamp, flashlight or book light needed. This was what really changed my life! It is incredible to be able to read as my husband watches TV in the pitch black each evening.

I’ll admit I love the anonymity that the Nook brings. When I am on an airplane, I am not sure I want Joe Blow next to me checking out what I am reading. Then again, I also don’t want him to strike up a conversation with me, so that may be my personal problem.

Good points, Lesley. Sometimes community is built around books, whether formally in a book club or (as you say) just sitting near someone in a coffee shop and striking up a converstaion over a familiar book cover.

And that thing about being at the best part so the bedside light is still on? My wife calls that the point of no return. Sometimes we hit it when still 3 or more chapters from the end!

I can very much relate to his, Lesley. I reluctantly bought a nook a few months ago and even though I enjoy reading on it (and for (international) travel, it’s basically indispensable), I still love books oh so very much.
I don’t see myself parting with good books any time soon.

Yes I own a Kindle and love to read books on it , just as much as a book. I am very cheap and I will buy a book if my book buddies buzz about it. But I will get books from my library too. yes it took me a while to decide on which one I wanted. There are times I want a nook , but I am very happy with my Kindle
