My husband and I have a policy of priorities that is: God, self, spouse, children, etc. The "self" comes before spouse and children for health purposes only. Our thought process is that if we don't take care of ourselves, we can't successfully take care of others.

Please note: this rarely has to come in to play. When my baby cries in the morning I (of course) go to her before I eat breakfast or get myself ready. Her survival needs come first. But if Eric is really stressed, I will recommend that he get out on a bike ride before he spends the rest of the night with me. I know that his mind is in a better place when he's taken care of himself (quiet time, eating right, exercise) before giving of himself to me or Rooney.
