On being 29

in birthdays

As I soak up the last 6 months of my twenties, this quote really gets me. For those of you also in your twenties, enjoy!

“It happens often about the twenty-ninth year of a life that all the forces that have been engaged through the years of childhood, adolescence and youth in confused and sometimes angry combat range themselves in ordered ranks, one is uncertain of one’s aims, meaning and power during these years of tumultuous growth when aspiration has no relation to fulfillment and one plunges here and there with energy and misdirection during the strain and stress of the making of a personality until at last we reach the twenty-ninth year, the straight and narrow gateway of maturity and life which was all uproar and confusion narrows down to form and purpose and we exchange a dim possibility for a big or small reality.” –Gertrude Stein

Hi Lesley, Long time, no see! Was just on the couch reading your recent blog posts. You're such a great writer. I too am enjoying the last 6 months in my twenties. When is your birthday? Mine is on March 22. We're thinking NY or Vegas since we have a couple of free tickets. I'm sure you can agree that the 20s were filled with so many life changes (college, living on our own, break-ups, new relationships, various jobs, marriages and now you're a mom). While these changes have been both great and challenging, I can honestly say that I think we've both ended our 20s with a bang! Cheers to both of us.

Stacey! No way you are 32! I would not have guessed so...do people always say you look young? I am actually looking forward to 30. It doesn't really scare me tooooo much. :)

You guys aren't in your thirties yet?! Sheesh! ;] Well, be encouraged. I'm in my 32nd year and the thirties are not as bad as everyone made them out to be. Plus, you're ahead of the game, so look forward to them.

Love this quote and anxious for my thirtieth year while doing my best to love each and every crazy moment where I'm figuring out who I am and the direction I want to take. Thanks for sharing.
