Death of the Petit Cake

in work

I’ve got to be honest. I don’t like seeing perfectly good dessert thrown away. Unfortunately, there were approximately 340 petit cakes that went to waste today at the Radisson during an awards banquet I attended for work.

I’m not sure who I should direct my anger towards: the kitchen staff for clearly overestimating how much people eat, or the hundreds of men and women in the room who suddenly started following their diet plan as soon as the cake trays were set on table?
But the worst part? The very worst part? It was when no one else at my table picked up a single mini cake so I started to feel like I couldn’t eat one either. Will they judge me, I wondered? Is it impolite at an awards banquet to eat dessert and I didn’t get the memo? Why is it okay that everyone gobbled down their dry chicken, rice pilaf and carrots but not the chocolate cake squares?
And why, WHY, am I only the only girl ever eating at these dumb mixers and networking events. Free food? There is no way I am turning it down….no way.

OK, you totally need to read my book. And screw them. Eat the cake. At least take it home in your purse and scarf it down in private.

I don’t think you could have fit all 340 in your purse, but you could have given it a try. I wonder if they would freeze well? I am also a girl who loves to eat. I really hate it when I am with other people at a restaurant and they order a huge meal and then eat 2 bites, not even bothering to take the leftovers.

Ohhh you should have eaten your cake right there, then asked the person next to you if they were gonna eat their cake. They would have either followed and eaten theirs or given you theirs. See, the room must have been full of followers and they needed the Lovely Leslie to be their leader in eating the first bite. I think your new motto should be, “who will eat all the cake if I don’t take the first bite?”

I should have admitted…

I did eat a piece. And I wanted another one. So I told the lady next to me that the chocolate was really, really, good. She said, “I think I ate too much this winter.” And I said, “That’s okay. Eat more.”

Sigh.
