Planting Paperwhites

It’s not Christmas time yet, but November does bring a hint of the month to come. Every year my mom and grandma plant paperwhites, which are beautiful bulb flowers that grows indoors.

A few years ago, I waited too long to find the bulbs. Every nursery in town sold out! This year, the Gifted Gardener is selling them– 6 for $5.99.

I already planted mine, and then I’ll start another batch in a a week or so. All you need is a glass bowl/vase of some kind and rocks or marbles.

I have a new tip on how to keep paperwhites from getting to heavy and falling over. The hint is that when they get to be about two inches tall, and their roots have started growing, give them one shot of vodka for every four bulbs that you have growing. You only need to do it once. This stunts their growth, but still allows their blossoms to thrive, and the don't topple over. I can't wait to try it. I won't have to hold mine together with a bow this year. Yippee!

remember when you tried to get me paperwhites for homemade christmas? I still have the pitcher and rocks. maybe i'll get some bulbs put them to good use.

I planted mine too about a week ago and they are already shooting up! Hooray for Christmas time!
