The power of prayer

Can I recommend a few books that I’ve been reading now for at least the past year? They’re written by Stormie Omartian called The Power of a Praying Wife and The Power of a Praying Woman.

Both of these books were given to me. Actually, I just lied. I stole one of them when I was volunteering last year for a city-wide children’s book drive. I don’t think any kid could tackle the Power of a Praying Woman and felt that God gifted me with the book. It’s okay that I choose to look at it that way, right?

Every morning, in the rush between showering, smoothie making, packing my backpack for the ol’ bikeride, and making a lunch– I try to squeeze in at last a chapter of each book. It’s easy to do because the chapters are short and contain a brief summary about what you’re praying for, and then the actual prayer followed by few short verses. The books have 30 chapters, so I read whatever chapter corresponds with the date.

Sometimes it’s hard to know how to pray for ourselves. We feel selfish doing so, or we simply don’t know what kind of prayer we need. It goes the same for our husbands. How do we pray for their needs like work, health and their faith? The author makes a great point– too often we try to change people (husbands, parents, kids, friends) rather than praying for them. When we let God take control, we don’t have to.
